Up to Half of World's Food Wasted
The amount of food waste
squanders precious resources, including land, water and energy.
As much as 2 billion metric tons of food are wasted each
year, tantamount to nearly half the food produced worldwide, according to a report by the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers. Waste in developed economies is attributed to marketing practices
and consumer behavior. "This is food that could be used to feed the
world's growing population -- as well as those in hunger today. It is also an
unnecessary waste of the land, water and energy resources that were used in the
production, processing and distribution of this food," said Tim Fox of
